Wanaka, New Zealand – Riders converged on Snow Park NZ for the fourth annual Burton New Zealand Open, the Southern Hemispheres biggest snowboard event. When the competition concluded, there were two new emerging Tour leaders shining above the international field, Americans Danny Davis and Ellery Hollingsworth. While US Olympians Mason Aguirre and Kelly Clark showed world class form it was rookie Davis and teenage star Hollingsworth who have taken control at the helm of the Worlds largest snowboard tour. Danny Davis, seen as one of this seasons biggest threats to take the TTR World Tour Championship title laid claim to the Nr#1 spot on World Tour rankings through a well accumulated array of top finishes. In the first TTR event of the year, the 4(four) Star Burton Abominable Snow Jam Davis finished second in the Slopestyle event and seventh in the Halfpipe. Now, at the NZO with his third in the Halfpipe and a top sixteen spot in the Slopestyle, he has accumulated four results giving Davis an enviable early season lead ahead of fellow Americans Steve Fisher and Louie Vito with fourth placed going to Norwegian Mikkel Bang. Ellery Hollingsworth jumped into the Womens TTR World leader position when she received third place in Slopestyle this weekend. This is Hollingsworths fourth 2006/2007 TTR result, which puts her in first place. Fellow Americans Hana Beaman and Elena Hight moved into second and third place, respectively. The 2006 Burton NZ Open, which was held from 3rd to the 5th August at Snowpark NZ in Wanaka, New Zealand is seen as a pinnacle on TTRs Southern Hemisphere tour leg. Now in its fourth consecutive year, it is the NZOs first year on the tour with its Slopestyle and Halfpipe results contributing towards Ranking points in both the mens and womens formats. In the Slopestyle event, it was Americans ‘ Kevin Pearce and Hana Beaman, whos solid, smooth and varied runs impressed the judges the most. Both were credited 700 TTR points for their wins and $5,000 NZ dollars each. Beaman, who at 23years old is on top of her game, earned her second consecutive NZO Slopestyle win. One of the few females to ride the more difficult structures at the top of the course, she combined with solid trick combinations and her runs were flawless. Beamans season has begun well and she will be one of the fiercest contenders to the World Championships Tour Crown, currently held by 2005/2006 womens TTR World Tour Champion Cheryl Maas(NED). In the Halfpipe event, the mens crown went to American Mason Aguirre. Aguirres winning run included overhead back-to-back 1080s and back-to-back 900s, while Womens Halfpipe winner Kelly Clark(USA) consistently chalked four meter marks above the coping. Clark has returned to her top form after a five-month break from arm surgery and concussion. Im so stoked. To come back and do well in two different contests is really encouraging, she said. The two winners, cheered by the 1500 strong crowd, both pocketed 700 TTR points and $5,000 NZ dollars for their classy show. The Burton New Zealand Open has proved to be an important milestone in the tour, with crowds exceeding 8,000 persons over the three-day event period, as well as 180 competitors, a $50,000 NZ dollar cash prize pool and the birth of new guns at the helm of 2006/2007 TTR Championships Tour.
