Burton European Open Postponed due to weather conditions in swiss alps
Burton Snowboards and LAAX have decided to postpone the Burton European Open from January 2012 to the end of February due to the current weather conditions in the European Alps. The BEO is now scheduled from Feb. 25th – March 3rd, 2012.
Burton and LAAX are committed to providing a very high standard of Slopestyle and Halfpipe snowboarding events, which the temperatures at the moment do not allow. Preparation of a park set-up that meets the expectations of organizers and riders will not be possible, therefore postponement of the event has been decided.
TTR supports the decision the event organizer and the resort took last week. ‘It’s better for the sport to postpone the Burton European Open, rather than completely cancel the event for 2012. It is one of the most important events on the 6Star TTR World Tour for both amateurs and pros and we back the decision not to risk bad course conditions early January.’ says Reto Lamm, TTR President.
Due to the packed event calendar in snowboarding, the only viable option to host the BEO in Laax was the week of Feb 25th – March 3rd 2012, which has consequences for two 5 star events on the tour, as well as the qualification process for the World Snowboarding Championships.
Affected are the 5 Star TTR Event Nescafé Champs Open in Leysin, as well as the US Grand Prix hosted in Mammoth, USA, whose final weekends are now held simultaneously to BEO. Burton and TTR are working together with the other event organizers to minimize impact on riders and the event schedules.
With regards to the World Snowboarding Championships qualifications, TTR is working on extending the deadline for WSC qualification, to make sure that all riders have a fair chance to collect more points to make the Top 50 men’s and Top 30 women’s.
Originally, the deadline for qualifying for the WSC 2012 in Oslo from 10-19 February was set with the Burton European Open Halfpipe competition as the closing score for the WSC ranking. We will keep riders informed on the adapted qualification process.
